Excursion suggestions - in and around Velturno

The “Keschtnweg” – The “Chestnut trail” An excursion through the Val Isarco in the sign of the chestnut

One big line of chestnut groves spreads from Varna near Bressanone all along the slopes of Velturno and Villandro to the High Plateau of Renon and down to Bolzano. An ideal route for the “Chestnut trail” which should not only be thought of as an Autumn excursion as the landscape is extremely attractive all year round thanks to the diverse vegetation of the area.

The signposted trail leads through colourful mixed forests, lush green meadows and imposing chestnut groves – a very special experience you don’t want to miss. Along the “Chestnut trail” various farmers offer regional products for sale, artistic and natural monuments bear witness to a centuries-old culture, places steeped in legend tell tales of witches, fairies and ghosts.

In Europe, the chestnut, more than most other tree species, has always taken in a vital and distinct part. It has been so important as to be honoured as “bread tree” (until modern times the chestnut provided nourishment for at least 6 months of the year). The vital importance which this tree had, even in our latitudes, is still well documented through a variety of writings and sayings.
The chestnut is a companion of the people and has integrated with them. As a result, a veritable “chestnut culture” has grown up around it. Moreover, the “Chestnut trail” helps people to discover, and hopefully to love and enjoy, the way in which man and nature live side by side.

Discover the part of the “Chestnut trail” which runs through and by Velturno!
